Child Support reduction when income has dropped

by | Jul 30, 2026 | child support | 0 comments

I am frequently asked about Tennessee child support orders where the person ordered to pay says that their income the child support was based on is greater than the amount they currently earn, and they would like to lower the child support payment. This can be done if the new child support calculations show at least a 15% variation (reduction) in the child support amount.

The other caveat is that the lower income amount must not be due to a voluntary quitting of the higher paying job or due to being fired from the job. Under those circumstances, you would likely be held to the higher income from the former job, at least for a period of time. We at Parker and LaDuke can run the child support calculations and let you know if you qualify for a reduction in your child support.
