If you and your spouse realize that divorce is the only way to fix your relationship, you'll soon find yourself thinking about everything from property division to your future life.

However, before you do anything, you need to consider your child's well-being (if you have one with your soon-to-be ex-spouse).

Divorce is sure to impact your child, so you need to be open and honest throughout the entire process. Here are some of the many steps you can take when preparing to tell your child about your divorce:

  • Make notes so you know exactly what you are going to say. You don't want to "wing it," as you may forget to discuss some of the more important details.
  • Schedule a time that works for both you and your child. As one of the most important conversations you'll ever have, you can't rush it. You must prepare to sit down for an extended period of time.
  • Prepare yourself to answer a variety of questions. Regardless of your child's age, you know that he or she will have questions, all of which you need to answer. You should prepare yourself for everything your child could ask.

By taking these basic steps, you'll be in a much better position to tell your child about your divorce. It still won't be easy, but at least you'll have a system in place for pushing the conversation forward.

Once you have this out of the way, your mind will be clear, which makes it much easier to push forward with other matters regarding the divorce process.
