What to do when it’s time to ask for a divorce

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2018 | divorce | 0 comments

If the time comes to ask for a divorce, you can’t take the easy way out. You need to face this head on, knowing that the conversation you have with your spouse will go a long way in putting you on the right track to completing the process in a timely and efficient manner.

There are many steps you can take to prepare for this conversation, with these among the most important:

  • Choose a time when the both of you are able to sit down and discuss what’s going on.
  • Think about what you are going to say so that you don’t “freeze up” as the conversation moves forward.
  • Be calm and direct, all the while sticking to your guns. You don’t want to be talked out of divorce if you know it’s the right thing to do.
  • Be safe, even if it means talking about divorce in a public place or doing so over the phone.
  • Make it clear that you are serious about moving forward, as threatening divorce is never a good strategy.

These aren’t the only tips to keep in mind when asking for a divorce, but each one can help put your mind at ease.

As long as you are open, honest and to the point, you should feel comfortable making your way through this conversation without too much additional stress. From there, you can focus on your legal rights and the steps you need to take to start the process. This will bring you closer to finalizing your divorce and moving on with your life.
