Can child custody arrangements change in the future?

Going through a divorce can be one of the most difficult times of your life. This is especially true if you have a child with the other person. As you move through the process, matters of child custody will certainly move to the forefront.

Generally speaking, there will be a custodial parent and a non-custodial parent. The child will live with the parent who has physical custody. The non-custodial parent will typically have visitation rights.

Over time, there is a possibility that a child custody arrangement could change. This typically happens when there is a substantial change in the circumstances of either parent. An example of this would be if a child has the desire to live with a different parent after they reach a particular age.

Since each case is different, there are no "cut and dry" rules pertaining to child custody modifications. Instead, family law courts look at each case individually.

At our law firm, we know just how difficult it can be for parents to get along after divorce. We also know that this can lead to a variety of concerns in regard to child custody. It's our goal to help people understand their legal rights and to ensure that they have the best possible relationship with their child.

If you are unhappy with your child custody arrangement and feel that something should change in the future, don't waste any time before learning more about your legal rights and the steps you need to take. The sooner you take action, the easier it is to understand if and when your situation can change.
