There is no way to avoid the many challenges associated with the divorce process. Instead, the best thing you can do is attempt to alleviate some of the stress.

For instance, you know that property division can be a sticking point. While you want to secure as many assets as possible, you know that your ex-spouse feels the exact same way.

This is where a property division checklist can help. With this guiding you, it'll be clear as to which type of property must be discussed during your divorce. It will also give you a better idea of any property that you brought into the marriage, thus not being subject to property division.

Here are the primary categories of a property division checklist:

  • Real property, with the family home fitting into this category
  • Personal property, which can include things such as home furnishings, electronics, collectibles and clothing
  • Financial assets, including but not limited to bank accounts, retirement accounts, stocks and bonds
  • Business assets, such as a share of a business or professional practice

It's a must that you are familiar with any and all assets that will be divided during your divorce. Also, do your best to ensure that the other person doesn't hide anything from the court.

With a property division checklist guiding you, it's much easier to feel better about the process and how it will unfold. Without this, it can be a challenge to stay on track, as you may not be familiar with everything that will come into play. Knowing your property inside and out, as well as your legal rights, can tilt the scale in your favor.
