If you are considering fostering or adoption as a means of growing your family, it's important to know what's expected of you as you embark on this journey.

In the state of Tennessee, there are many licensing requirements that you should become familiar with. By knowing what to expect up front, it's much easier to move through the process in a timely manner.

If you want to receive approval as a foster or adoptive parent in Tennessee, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be 21 years of age or older
  • You must be a resident of the state
  • You can be divorced, single, or married
  • You can have other children (but this is not required)
  • You can rent or own your home
  • You can be employed or unemployed, as long as you are able to meet the financial requirements of supporting a family

The requirements to become a foster or adoptive parent are not as strict as many people assume.

If you are interested in moving forward, you can complete all the paperwork as required by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services.

Once the process begins to move forward, you'll soon find yourself in the middle of a home study. This is when you learn more about fostering or adoption, while also showing that you are fit to bring a child into your home.

Although there are foster parent and adoption licensing requirements in the state of Tennessee, this is nothing to be concerned about. When you know what to expect, everything will begin to come together as you move forward one step at a time.
